This season, Carly Cushnie and Michelle Ochs reference the works of three conceptual, minimalist artists- Henri Matisse, Richard Serra, and Sol Lewitt.
Utilizing color, line, embroidery, and contrasting fabrications, the Cushnie et Ochs Pre-Fall 2018 Collection balances art with function.
Inspired by the colorful, overlapping shapes of the Matisse “Cut-Out” series, the Cushnie et Ochs Pre-Fall Collection features playful color-blocking across all categories, and an organic, geometric print seen in select ready-to-wear pieces and handbags.
Graphic line-work embroidery is informed by the shapes in the Matisse nude figure line drawings- mixing and layering the textures and fabrications of chiffon, beading, and silk.
Sculptor Richard Serra’s work challenges viewers’ perception of their bodies in relation to interior spaces and landscapes. Serra’s concept is translated through delicate, asymmetric metal hardware which snakes down the front of various footwear silhouettes, and is seen detailed across the necklines of multiple dresses, bodysuits and separates.
The Pre-Fall Collection also features multi-color sequin embroidery inspired by artist Sol Lewitt’s “Vertical Brushstrokes” paintings, as well as draped, exaggerated fringe detailing. Uniquely colored top stitching is seen along the seams of handbags- further exploring the juxtaposition of line and color.
